Procedural Content Generation: Goals, Challenges and Actionable Steps
نویسندگان
چکیده
This chapter discusses the challenges and opportunities of procedural content generation (PCG) in games. It starts with defining three grand goals of PCG, namely multi-level multi-content PCG, PCG-based game design and generating complete games. The way these goals are defined, they are not feasible with current technology. Therefore we identify nine challenges for PCG research. Work towards meeting these challenges is likely to take us closer to realising the three grand goals. In order to help researchers get started, we also identify five actionable steps, which PCG researchers could get started working on immediately. 1998 ACM Subject Classification I.2.1 Applications and Expert Systems: Games

Designing Procedural Game Spaces: A Case Study
Procedural content generation holds many promises for the design, art, and production of video games. It also poses a number of challenges. This paper concentrates on the procedural generation of game spaces. We specifically argue for a connection of a player’s agency with the procedural world generation. First, space generation in games is broken down into four main approaches: designercreated...
متن کاملSearch-Based Procedural Content Generation
Recently, a small number of papers have appeared in which the authors implement stochastic search algorithms, such as evolutionary computation, to generate game content, such as levels, rules and weapons. We propose a taxonomy of such approaches, centring on what sort of content is generated, how the content is represented, and how the quality of the content is evaluated. The relation between s...
متن کاملData Games: Towards Generating Content using the Real World
New data is added to the Internet by the minute [10, 33]. This project aims at expanding the concept of data games, which explore the use of open data in procedural content generation. To do so, it tackles challenges in data acquisition, transformation and balancing. Data games have the potential of serving as data visualization tools for open data, while also providing new sources of inspirati...
متن کاملGrammar-based Procedural Content Generation from Designer-provided Difficulty Curves
In experience-driven procedural content generation (EDPCG) [15], the challenge of (parts of) a level are often subject to player-adaptive optimisation. However, this may interfere with the design goals of the game designer with respect to the difficulty build-up of the entire level, e.g., the designer may have specific ideas about where the climax of a level ought to be. This can be a reason fo...
متن کاملProcedural Modeling as an Analytical Tool for 3D Survey in Urban Design Assessment
This paper examines procedural modeling as a tool for 3D modeling creation. Procedural modeling historically has been used for 3D visualization of natural features, but with the release of the software CityEngine in 2008, the technology can easily be adopted also in problem domains dealing with urban environments. Then, we will examine and compare two types of modeling, traditional and proc...
